Protecting The Red Squirrel


The North West Red Squirrel Group was established in September 2010 and became a constituted group in November 2011. The group was established for charitable aims and purposes only, with the following objectives:

  1. To raise awareness of the protected local red squirrel within the Derry City & Strabane District Council district.
  2. To work within North West Ireland based in Derry/Londonderry , with other voluntary organisations, institutions, business and local residents and landowners, in a common effort, to protect and enhance the red squirrel, for wildlife conservation.
  3. To control the grey squirrel, to prevent the spread of squirrel pox.

Membership of the Group is open to individuals with an interest in red squirrels and who subscribe to the objectives of the Group. Following acceptance by the Committee, such members shall be called Individual Members and shall be entitled to vote at meetings of the Group. Annual membership is £5 to be paid to the treasurer.

MUFF GLEN EGLINTON CHALLENGE FUND PROJECT UPDATE The group is currently monitoring all squirrels and supplementary feeding . There have been many sightings of red squirrels at two of our feeders which is wonderful to see. Grey squirrels are present in a different area and a control programme is underway, 9 greys have been caught so far.


Next event is a planning meeting for committee and anyone interested in conservation of red squirrels. Meet at the front lounge of the Everglades Hotel, Prehen at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 2nd March.
